Er zijn weinig filmbubbels die zo innemend werken als het filmfestival van Venetië. Ook deze tweeëntachtigste editie van het sterrenfestijn speelde zich af in de beschermde omgeving van een zonnig schiereiland, waar bijna alle zalen zich binnen vijf minuten van elkaar bevinden. Dit jaar gelukkig geen hittegolf op het Lido, maar wel weer een goedgevulde rode loper. Zo was grote speler Netflix na een jaar van afwezigheid weer vertegenwoordigd met Guillermo del Toro’s monsterepos Frankenstein, de George Clooney-show Jay Kelly en de apocalyptische thriller A House of Dynamite.

Badend in het zweet bewogen tientallen sterren uit Hollywood en daarbuiten zich tussen 28 augustus en 7 september over de rode loper van de Biënnale. Niets herinnerde eraan dat er in 2023 nog een hoop grote namen op het filmfestival van Venetië ontbraken. Arbeidsvoorwaarden kunnen een reden zijn om te staken, zo leerden we vorig jaar, maar weersomstandigheden niet. En dus weerstond Angelina Jolie de bloedhitte omhuld door nepbont en spoedde Nicole Kidman zich na haar poses voor de paparazzi dankbaar richting de verlossende ingang van het filmpaleis.
