Het is ruim tien jaar terug dat Laura Poitras terechte lof oogstte met Citizenfour, de journalistieke documentaire waarin ze NSA-klokkenluider Edward Snowden een platform gaf. Sindsdien regisseerde de geëngageerde Amerikaanse een minder geslaagde film over Julian Assange en won ze in Venetië verrassend de Gouden Leeuw (met All the Beauty and the Bloodshed). Vooral vanwege dat laatste is het verbijsterend dat haar nieuwste en misschien wel beste werk afgelopen nazomer, op hetzelfde festival, niet eens in de hoofdcompetitie draaide.
Op 10 november kwam Oliver Stone’s Snowden uit. De maandag daarop bekeek ik in de bioscoop de film over (misschien wel) de belangrijkste klokkenluider in de Amerikaanse geschiedenis. Toen ik Snowden had gezien, raakte ik ook benieuwd naar de documentaire Citizenfour (2014). Citizenfour is de codenaam waaronder de échte Edward Snowden contact opnam met documentairemaakster Laura Poitras. In de film worden stukken nagespeeld uit de documentaire, en ook Poitras zelf komt voor in de gedramatiseerde weergave van Oliver Stone. Ik besloot beide werken te kijken én te recenseren, het resultaat is hieronder terug te lezen.
