Een beeldenmarathon van ruim vijftien uur schetst het leven van een man die niet aan zijn noodlot kan ontsnappen. Fassbinder bleef trouw aan de tijdsetting van het bronmateriaal: Alfred Döblins roman (1929) en de eerste filminterpretatie daarvan (1931) situeerden hoofdpersoon Franz Biberkopf al in het Berlijn van het interbellum. Anno 2020 eert regisseur Burhan Qurbani, die dit jaar zelf óók veertig wordt, de veertigste verjaardag van Fassbinders cultepos met een eigentijdse bewerking.
