Amper een jaar na het claustrofobische Conclave voelt Edward Bergers Ballad of a Small Player bijna als een goedmakertje. De binnenkamers van het Vaticaan zijn ingeruild voor de weelde van Macau, waar neonkleuren en een replica van de Eiffeltoren gelukszoekers op de casinostrip toelachen. Toch bevindt de zelfbenoemde Lord Doyle zich dichter bij de hel dan bij de hemel. En dat is ook direct waar het wringt: bij deze opzichtige allegorie is geen scherpe blik nodig om de spiraal van zelfvernietiging te doorgronden.
Béla Tarrs The Man from London (2007) is achtendertig minuten onderweg als de memorabele introductie van het personage van Tilda Swinton volgt. Zoals een goochelaar iets uit zijn hoge hoed tovert, zo glijdt de camera op het bewuste moment achter de rug van de eigenlijke hoofdpersoon vandaan. Tarr geeft Swintons verschijnen gewicht, voert haar in een handvol sleutelscènes op maar laat haar daarna ook weer zonder pardon uit de film verdwijnen. Toch is haar rol cruciaal om dit hermetisch aandoende misdaaddrama dieper te kunnen doorgronden.

Fifty Shades-baken Dakota Johnson en kameleon Tilda Swinton zijn danstalent en dansdocent in Suspiria, de film waarvan je dacht dat de regisseur van Call Me by Your Name hem in ieder geval nooit zou maken. Het rommelige resultaat is een samenraapsel van botsende stijlimpressies en grote ideeën, onnodig belast met de erfenis van het veelgeprezen origineel.
