In het psychologische drama Sons komt een ambtsdienaar voor het blok te staan als haar persoonlijke streven naar gerechtigheid niet langer strookt met haar werk in de gevangenis. Op een intense, directe, maar helaas ook ongeloofwaardige manier toont de film hoe een gekrenkte vrouw tot het uiterste gaat om haar recht te laten zegevieren.
Op Sumba Island, het Oost-Indonesische decor voor Marlina the Murderer, worden de doden niet altijd meteen begraven. Ze rusten vaak in een hoekje van de huiskamer, tot de familieleden het geld voor de dure megalitische grafmonumenten (grote steenconstructies) bijeen hebben gebracht. Zo kan het gebeuren dat de overleden echtgenoot van Marlina (Marsha Timothy) in het huis van zijn vrouw ‘getuige’ is van een aantal macabere gebeurtenissen, terwijl de gemiddelde westerse kijker misschien nog zal denken dat de man in kwestie zijn siësta houdt.
