Op de dag dat de nieuwe film van Aanmodderfakker-regisseur Michiel ten Horn de 54ste editie van het IFFR opende, waren er voor pashouders ook alvast twee titels uit de kenmerkende Tigercompetitie te zien. Na het bekijken van Wondrous Is the Silence of My Master en Vitrival – The Most Beautiful Village in the World bleef één gedachte dominant: waar het luchtige Vitrival net wat te achteloos leunt op een mix van sketchachtige scènes, gimmicks en dorpse deadpan-humor, had het overwegend ernstige Wondrous Is the Silence of My Master juist wel wat meer humor kunnen gebruiken.

Ruim drie jaar geleden werd het bestaan van de negentienjarige Gijs op zijn kop gezet door de onverwachtse zelfdoding van zijn familie-en zielsverwant Arie. Mijn Grote Broer gaat de onvermijdelijke ‘waarom’-vraag niet uit de weg, maar verbeeldt bovenal het verdriet en de veerkracht van de mensen die achterbleven. Het resultaat is een intieme, confronterende documentaire, die door de karakteristieke humor van de goudeerlijke Gijs ook een onverwachte dosis luchtigheid bevat.
