Ik was nooit zo’n liefhebber van Nederlandse films. In mijn jonge jaren werd ik overvallen met tenenkrommend slechte komedies van het kaliber Spion van Oranje, kinderfilms in de categorie Kruistocht in Spijkerbroek en ‘familietitels’ als, juist, Alles is Familie (of Liefde). Dit was mijn beeld van Nederlandse films, en jaarlijks verschenen er titels die mijn indrukken nog eens onderstreepten. Verliefd op Ibiza, Rokjesdag, en onlangs nog ‘daar blijf ik weg’-releases in het straatje Voor Elkaar Gemaakt/Tuintje in m’n Hart.
Na de dood van zijn vader woont neuroloog Lary (Mimi Branescu) een drukbezochte familiereünie bij. Wie in dergelijke omstandigheden verzoening en saamhorigheid verwacht, komt bedrogen uit: bijna drie uur lang zoomt de Roemeense regisseur Cristi Puiu (The Death of Mr. Lazarescu) in op de diverse spanningen die de onderlinge verhoudingen tussen familieleden op scherp zetten.
