Tussen 10 en 30 januari is EYE Amsterdam het decor voor een retrospectief rond de Taiwanese cineast Ming-liang Tsai. Het filmprogramma is ook een prachtgelegenheid voor de Nederlandse première van Tsai’s VR-installatie The Deserted (2017). Tijdens een voorbezichtiging van de installatie wordt één van de rode draden in een inmiddels omvangrijke oeuvre zichtbaar: Tsai’s eindeloze sympathie voor de eenzame zielen, die verlaten maar gelukkig niet geheel vergeten zijn.
Zijn we allemaal gewoon luie filmconsumenten geworden, chargeer ik moedwillig? Naar aanleiding van negatieve kritieken op het ’trage’ en ambigue Resurrection (Kristof Hoornaert, 2017) discussieerden twee collega’s en ik over beeldtaal, filmkritiek en filmconsumentisme.
‘Ik vond die film maar saai. Eigenlijk gebeurt er niets’. Ik heb eens nagedacht hoe vaak ik die zin (of variaties daarop) al niet gehoord heb. Uiteraard diende een definitief antwoord zich niet aan, maar de overdenking sterkte mijn conclusie: een film zonder verhaal is als een schip in de Bermudadriehoek. Laat ik eens onbeschaamd generaliseren: wij mensen zoeken naar ontwikkelingen en gebeurtenissen. Wat we willen zien is niet wat er is, maar wat er verandert. Zonder verandering geen plot, en zonder plot geen film. Of ligt het genuanceerder?
