Op 5 maart 2002 raakte de Chinese overheid kortstondig de controle kwijt over het centrale staatstelevisiekanaal. De stoorzenders waren een aantal beoefenaars van de spirituele discipline Falun Gong, die in 1999 werd verboden door de Chinese Communistische Partij. Eternal Spring is een knap geanimeerde, maar inhoudelijk nogal schematische poging van een gerenommeerde illustrator én Falun Gong-adept om de televisiekaping opnieuw in herinnering te brengen.
De gerenommeerde Chinese regisseur Yimou Zhang beweegt zich de laatste jaren op curieuze wijze tussen producties die het heersende communistische regime vieren en producties die datzelfde regime juist bekritiseren. Het vereist weinig voorkennis om uit te vinden tot welke categorie het stevig gecensureerde One Second behoort.
