Er was en is in Nederland dringende behoefte aan een ruimere publieke duiding van de Indonesische onafhankelijkheidsoorlog (1945-1949). De Oost (2020) baarde opzien en imponeerde op filmisch vlak, maar zorgde door zijn rigoureuze fictie (de ontwikkeling van een heus lespakket ten spijt) bovenal voor een gespannen respons vanuit de veteranengemeenschap. Ook Indië Verloren… (premièretitel Selling a Colonial War) ontmantelt het Nederlandse politieke en militaire ingrijpen op de archipel, maar staart zich gelukkig niet blind op het aanwakkeren van een nationaal schuldcomplex.
Luttele weken na het nieuws dat William Friedkin was overleden ging zijn zwanenzang in première op het filmfestival van Venetië. The Caine Mutiny Court-Martial is geen sentimenteel vaarwel, maar een oerdegelijk rechtbankdrama, gebaseerd op een gewichtig theaterstuk uit de jaren vijftig. Jammer dat ook deze bewerking van het verhaal niet ontkomt aan een moralistisch staartje.
Talrijke Hollywoodproducties hebben ons de voorbije decennia geleerd dat Amerikaanse mariniers en andere speciale eenheden met hun daadkrachtige optredens instaan voor het welzijn van de westerse wereld. Special Ops: Lioness rekent in het kritische spoor van Homeland op vileine wijze met dat patriottische idee af. Toch wringt het in de uitwerking: de aangezette tragiek die vergelijkbare films en series vaak kenmerkt blijkt hier nog altijd onmisbaar om het verhaal te vertellen.
