In het land dat de watersnoodramp van 1953 heeft doorstaan, is de strijd tegen het oprukkende water een onvermijdelijk thema. De sentimentele rampenfilm De Storm en de EO-serie Als de Dijken Breken getuigen daarvan en met de actuele zorgen over klimaatverandering zit er mogelijk nog meer in het vat. Toch heeft Nederland geen rol van betekenis gespeeld bij het maken van Families Like Ours, een Europese coproductie over de massa-evacuatie van Denemarken. Het speculatieve verhaal over de ontwrichting van een welvarend land begint prikkelend, maar de kortzichtige oriëntatie van het drama gooit roet in het eten.
Voor een overweldigend overlevingsdrama heb je weinig nodig, bewijst het Spaanse Nowhere. Het grootste deel van de film speelt zich af in een zeecontainer, met een hoogzwangere schipbreukelinge als (eerst nog) eenzame hoofdrolspeelster. De situatie is extreem, de aanloop ernaartoe zo mogelijk nog extremer. Indrukwekkend, maar ook risicovol: de grens van de geloofwaardigheid is met zo’n scenario snel bereikt.
Aanstaande woensdagavond zit ik er klaar voor: na een grove vijfentwintig jaar keert Schwarzeneggers semi-vriendelijke Terminator uit Judgment Day (1991) weer terug op het witte doek….
Ik zat toch best met gemengde gevoelens, toen ik las dat The Circle van Dave Eggers verfilmd zou gaan worden. Mijn eerste kennismaking met deze dystopische roman was een jaar of tweeënhalf geleden. Het boek was destijds erg populair, en velen schaarden The Circle in het rijtje Brave New World (Aldous Huxley, 1932) en 1984 (George Orwell, 1948/49).
