Wie Silent Friend een kans wil geven, doet zichzelf een plezier door vooraf (nog eens) Ildikó Enyedi’s On Body and Soul te kijken. In deze mysterieuze en terecht bekroonde film uit 2018 ontdekken twee eenzame zielen dat ze elkaars dromen delen en daarin in dieren transformeren. In Silent Friend leggen de personages een vergelijkbaar wonderlijke reis af, ditmaal in hun fascinatie voor flora. In drie verschillende tijdperken onderzoekt Enyedi wat het betekent om verbonden te zijn; niet alleen als mensen onder elkaar, maar ook met een wereld die we makkelijk uit het oog verliezen.

Liefhebbers van de Franse komedieregisseur Quentin Dupieux zitten de laatste jaren bepaald niet verlegen om nieuwe uitspattingen. Tussen 2022 en 2025 wist de maker van het vindingrijke Realité en de uitgerekte bromvliegsketch Mandibules maar liefst zes speelfilms af te werken. Le Deuxième Acte wordt uitgebracht in dezelfde maand dat Dupieux’ nieuwste alweer uitgaat in Frankrijk. Overkill ligt op de loer, maar toch tilt een ensemble van steracteurs deze zelfbewuste komedie boven de luchtige middelmaat uit.
